The Problem

Healthcare provider reimbursement in emerging medical networks suffers from complex insurance verification, manual claim dispute cycles, and ambiguous patient out-of-pocket estimates. Medical clinics frequently experience 60 to 90-day delays in receiving insurance settlements, leading to cash flow volatility and uncollected patient debt.

The Solution

VitalPay provides a streamlined payment gateway and claims clearinghouse that verifies insurance eligibility at the point of care, calculates real-time patient co-pays, and submits clean digital claims directly to underwriters using standardized healthcare interoperability protocols.

Patients receive plain-language digital estimates prior to treatment and can settle balances instantly through mobile money, card, or micro-installment plans.

My Role

As Technical Lead, I led backend engineering and interoperability architecture:

  • Spearheaded the design of high-throughput API microservices handling patient verification and claim submittals.
  • Implemented HL7 / FHIR protocol bridges to integrate legacy hospital information systems (HIS) with modern payment processors.
  • Authored cryptographic audit logging to meet rigorous healthcare data regulatory requirements (HIPAA and NDPR).

Technology

  • Microservices Engine: Fastify and Node.js microservices running with schema validation using TypeBox for extreme throughput.
  • Relational Integrity: PostgreSQL with strict audit logging triggers and row-level security.
  • Caching & Queues: BullMQ and Redis for dependable claim retry handling, backoff strategies, and async webhook dispatching.
  • Frontend Portal: React dashboard with accessible data grids and comprehensive audit query views.

Outcome

  • Accelerated average healthcare provider reimbursement cycles from 74 days down to 11 days.
  • Successfully verified over 120,000 patient insurance claims in the first year of operation.
  • Reduced denied claim rates from 22% to under 3.5% through upfront validation checks.
